Toto Wolff Set to Sell Stake Valuing Mercedes F1 at £4.6 Billion

Team Principal Wolff has guided the Mercedes team to record-breaking success in Formula 1

Toto Wolff is engaged in advanced talks to sell a portion of his ownership stake in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal values the Mercedes team at £4.6bn – a record for an F1 team – after the McLaren team were valued at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to ownership structure in September.

Wolff, who owns one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, plans to divest a stake approximately 5%.

Wolff, aged 53 will remain as team principal and CEO if the sale goes through.

Ownership Breakdown

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes-Benz and industrial group Ineos, who each also own one-third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson stated: "We are providing no official statement on this. The management structure of Mercedes F1 stays unaltered, and all three partners are dedicated to continued achievements of Mercedes-Benz in F1."

Valuation Growth

This arrangement signifies a significant increase in value of the Mercedes team since Ineos Group bought its share for £208m in 2022.

This surge demonstrates the growth in valuations of F1 teams in the past few years due to the increasing appeal of the sport globally.

This trend was evident with the box-office performance of the Formula 1 film starring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which debuted last summer and has grossed more than $630m (£458 million) at cinemas worldwide.

It is the actor's top-grossing film and the highest-earning sports movie ever released.

Current Standings

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the constructors' championship, behind McLaren Racing, with three races remaining this season.

Their lead driver George Russell has secured victory in 2 of the 21 races so far and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes secured a record eight straight team titles and seven driver championships, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, between 2014 and 2021.
