Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.

This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on social media on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's determination was the possibility of the former president's transfer to embassies near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a record of arranging to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.

The legal document highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, the capital city, is situated around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist American leader Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

He is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a imprisonment assessment on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was found guilty of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to kill the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was prevented because it failed to get the backing of the military leaders. The current president was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The justices found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from running for public office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
