The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard body horror, but beneath Together resides a deep meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The story starts when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a slow burn of scares, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). The director weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He dreads the idea of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
