The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The speculation about this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer packed with striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs you can achieve if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in a variety of manners, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, players can look forward to another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
