Ex- Australian Lawmaker Jailed for Above Half a Decade for Criminal Acts

One-time lawmaker sentenced of sexually abusing two individuals connected through professional activities was given to nearly six years in jail.

Case Details

Gareth Ward, 44, was in prison since mid-year after a jury determined his guilt of attacking an individual and indecently assaulting another individual, in separate incidents in 2013 then 2015.

The defendant represented the coastal town of the regional area in the state legislature from the year 2011. He left his position as a government official when allegations came to light in 2021 but refused to quit the legislature and was re-elected in 2023.

Sentencing Details

Justice the judicial figure considered his visual impairment of legal blindness in the judgment and found "no different consequence besides detention could be considered".

The defendant, who participated via digital means at the judicial venue, will complete at no less than three years and nine months in custody before he can seek conditional freedom.

The court official said the judicial system needs to "send a stern message to potential criminals that criminal acts of this nature will be met with serious punishments".
