European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
