Blue Jays On the Brink of Victory After Yesavage Tames Dodgers in Fifth Match
Trey Yesavage delivered a performance for the ages and Davis Schneider launched a home run on the game's initial offering as the Blue Jays beat the Dodgers 6–1 on Wednesday, moving within one victory of their first World Series championship since 1993.
A Rookie's Record-Setting Night
The 22-year-old Yesavage, who debuted in the majors this past September, struck out 12 without issuing a walk – setting a new World Series record. The rookie right-hander gave up only a single run on three hits in seven innings. He started the season in Class A before sparse crowds, but has now earned two starting wins in the series in this seven-game set.
Early Offensive Explosion
Toronto’s hitters provided early support. On the game's opening offering, Schneider connected with a high-velocity fastball and sent it over the left-field fence. Immediately after, Vladimir Guerrero Jr followed with another blast to nearly the same spot. It marked the first time in World Series history that consecutive home runs opened a game, leaving the audience in awe before most had found their seats.
Yesavage Takes Control
Yesavage then went to work. He retired five straight via strikeout between the early frames, setting a rookie record before the streak was snapped by Kiké Hernández with a home run in the third inning to make it 2–1. That was the Dodgers' closest approach.
Building the Advantage
In the fourth, Daulton Varsho smacked a triple to right field after a defensive mistake, and Ernie Clement hit a sac fly to score him for a three to one lead. The Los Angeles offense continued to sputter from there. After scoring six runs in Monday’s 18-inning marathon, they’ve scored a mere four times in nearly 30 innings.
Seventh-Inning Rally
The Dodgers starter lasted into the seventh inning but exited in the seventh after the bases were packed. The two inherited runners scored – via a wild pitch and one more on a base hit – to push the lead to four runs. A eighth-inning base hit provided the last run.
Relievers Seal the Deal
Yesavage was cheered off the field from the Toronto faithful, and the pen closed it out. The late-inning pitchers each pitched an inning without allowing a run to secure the victory, combining for three strikeouts while protecting the rookie's gem.
Dodgers' Lineup Shuffle Falters
The Dodgers, who rearranged their batting order in search of a spark, again found little traction. Their key batter went hitless in four at-bats and is now hitless in seven at-bats since setting a World Series on-base record in Game 3.
On the Verge of a Championship
Now up 3–2, Toronto go back to their own stadium with two chances to clinch. The sixth game is set for Friday at Rogers Centre.
